General description

The Allow-list specifies the only available for a subscriber sites and pages. Its functionality includes redirection of a subscriber to the specified page on attempt to get resources outside this list. Redirection is only possible for HTTP requests, all HTTPS requests outside the access list are blocked without redirection. Most operating systems and browsers request HTTP resources at startup to determine if the Internet is available and to find the Captive Portal page.

The allowed resources list is created in two steps: first, a text file with the list of resources is created. Second, this file is converted into internal dictionary's format by the special utility.

Policing for Captive Portal

First we select the protocols for Captive Portal availability in a separate class, as it is described in Assignment of priorities.

http cs0
https cs0
dns cs0
icmp cs0
default cs1
bittorrent cs7

Next we create the configuration file captive_portal.cfg. It specifies the bandwidth limits in Captive Portal mode for each of 8 classes
